Fundraising in style

October 5, 2009

Last week I was invited to attend a debate at the Victoria & Albert museum, held in memory of Laurence Stracey, whose wife Emma is a WAY member.

Emma and Laurence’s family were also there and we had a great evening in quite spectacular surroundings.

The event was hosted by Farrer & Co, a very upmarket law firm, which apparently counts the Queen among their clients…

All proceeds raised from the event will go to WAY and I’m hoping several of the people who attended will donate generously with money, time or professional expertise.

Herts group go walkabout

September 21, 2009

Six members of the Herts and Beds WAY group plus family and friends (eleven people in all) took part in the Isabel Hospice Chain Walk on Sunday September 20th, and have already raised over £1,000 in sponsorship for the hospice.

Four of the walkers have very personal connections with the hospice as it is where their partners were cared for in the last days and months of their lives – either as “outpatients” in the day hospice or as patients.  The hospice has also provided support for them and their children through counselling and social and support groups.

Liz Monnickendam, who organised the walk said: “We are pleased to be able to take part in this walk as the Isabel Hospice played such a large part in our loved ones’ final days and delighted to have raised such a fantastic sum to help the continuing work of the hospice.”

“WAY brought us together, following the deaths of our partners,” she continues, “so we were glad to be able to walk as a group in their memory and to say thank you for the support that we have received.”

Well done to all of them for walking and raising money for such a worthy cause.

Amazing fundraising

September 7, 2009

WAY member Joanna Turner’s sister Amanda and her husband Nigel are taking part in the Great North Run on September 20th.

Check out their amazing fundraising page on Justgiving at www.justgiving.com/amandarockley

Helped by an inspirational message from Jo on the page, they have already raised over £3,000 – the most anyone has raised for WAY in a sponsored event, ever!!

So huge thanks to Amanda and Nigel for choosing WAY as their charity, and for Jo too…

Hope you both have a great run!

Jacqui’s jumping!

June 10, 2009

Brave WAY member Jacqui Smith is going to jump out of an aeroplane to raise money for WAY.

“I’ve always wanted to do a parachute jump, so I’m really excited about doing this,” she says.

She obviously has a head for adventure – during the WAY ski trip in Tignes in January Jacqui jumped off the top of a mountain and landed on skis, despite never having skiied in her life before. Three others joined her in the madness…

If technology allows, we’ll post a video of the great event here – good luck Jacqui!

WAY chosen for Three Peaks

June 10, 2009

WAY has been chosen by a bunch of guys working for Bayer Pharmaceuticals, who are going to do the Three Peaks Challenge in October.

We’re really exicted about this as they have no connection with WAY other than working with someone who is related to an active WAY member.

When given the information about WAY they decided we were a great cause – and sadly quite a good fit for a company that is trying hard to find a drug that will successfully treat lung cancer.

The guys are gearing up with office events, evenings out, dressing up, swear boxes etc to get staff behind them for this challenge, and all money raised will be divided between three deserving causes, of which WAY is one.

Win a car!

June 4, 2009

I’m really excited that WAY is going to take part in the Small Charity Car Draw run by the Foundation for Social Improvement!

We had been thinking about how to get hold of a brand new car which we could raffle to raise funds for WAY, but it was obviously going to be a mammoth thing to organise. We’d have to source the car, get tickets printed, comply with all the rules governing charity prize draws and so on… and then, into my inbox popped an email about the Small Charity Car Draw… serendipity indeed.

Tickets will be available on Sunday June 6 so watch this space… we’ll be selling them soon!
